Anxiety: why it can stop us feeling happy and how you can change it


Anxiety is all around us. You can see it in other people’s tense face expressions, the harsh tone of their voices, and the worry of the future’s uncertainty. It creeps up on many of us and before you know it you worry so much that it stops you from being happy. Why is that?

The reason why Anxiety can stop you from being happy is due to the very mechanics of Anxiety. Anxiety is the worry and thinking about the future. Will I be able to cope with this meeting? Will I have enough money to be able to pay all my bills and buy all Christmas presents this month? Will I be able to park my car? Will I get there on time? All these questions are to do with the future, which means you are missing the very moment of Now. The very moment of having a chance to be Happy. Because Happiness can only happen Now. Not tomorrow, not the day after, only Now. So if you miss the Now, you miss the chance.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. There are many ways to be in the Now, and one of them is Mindfulness. Here are three of them:

  1. Mindfulness. It focuses on Now. Breathing, feeling, hearing, tasting, and smelling. All these can bring you back to Now, because they are happening Now. You can consciously bring your thoughts back to Now, to what you are experiencing Now, and so giving yourself a chance to be Happy. It is this simple. And it really doesn’t matter if you go to Mindfulness classes, do formal Mindful meditation at home, or consciously bring your thoughts back to Now in different places at different times of the day, which is in effect Mindfulness on the go, you can train your mind to start taking more notice of Now, and so live in the Now. The more often you practice it the better, as this will have a compound effect. So give yourself that chance to be Happy today.
  2. Relaxing your muscles, consciously noticing how your muscles feel and gently easing the tension will help you re-connect with Now. Or relaxing your breathing. Consciously making your breaths longer. Reconnecting with Now, appreciating the sensation of being relaxed, and giving yourself a chance to be Happy.
  3. Excellent way to relax your muscles is via Hypnotherapy, whereby you relax your body and at the same time let your mind focus on what is not working for you and what you would like to happen to give yourself a chance to be Happy. And the best things about Hypnotherapy is that you don’t have to listen to anybody else’s advice because it’s you who decides exactly what to do and when. And through Hypnotherapy you can also decide to let go of limiting beliefs or even create new beliefs. Giving yourself a chance to be Happy.
